Croatia is ready to become the 20th country in the eurozone, from January 1, 2023. At least if the European Commission has its way.
”"Today, Croatia has taken a decisive step towards adopting the euro, our single currency. This will make Croatia's economy stronger and bring benefits to its citizens, businesses and society at large," Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a press release.
The announcement comes in the Commission's annual review of the situation of the countries still outside the eurozone. Bulgaria and Romania are also keen to join, but are not yet considered to meet the requirements.
The issue of Croatia will now be discussed by the EU countries' finance ministers on June 16-17, after which the green light will also be given by the next summit of heads of state and government and the EU Parliament.
Croatia became an EU member on 1 July 2013..
