
It won't be free for everyone – but just over 100 million kronor should be enough to send between 20,000 and 30,000 European 18-year-olds on a free Interrail holiday, hopes the EU Commission.
”It's important that we offer all young people the opportunity to broaden their horizons by discovering other countries. Education is not just about what we learn in classrooms, but what we discover through the culture and traditions of our fellow Europeans,” says Tibor Navracsics, the EU's Commissioner for Education and Culture, in a statement, after the European Commission decided on Thursday to allocate twelve million euros to free travel.
The system is intended to apply to young EU citizens who turn 18 this year. An information campaign is now set to be launched, after which travellers may be selected through some form of competition. This summer, the European Commission hopes the first train travellers will set off on the tracks.
