The start of construction for Poland's new major airport is drawing ever closer. Once it opens in 2027, it will be able to handle 100 million passengers each year, making it Europe's largest. 

The bill is planned to end up at a breathtaking 180 billion kronor.

For a few years now, the Polish government has been aiming to build a Central European transport hub in the country. The new airport, with the working name Centralny Port Komunikacyjny, is planned to be located between Warsaw and Łódź in the central parts of the country.

Now you can also get a glimpse of what the airport will look like, writes Business Insider.

Six architectural firms have each developed their own concept for the new building. The winning entry will be chosen next year, and the shovel is expected to be put in the ground in 2021.

When the airport opens, it will be able to handle around 45 million passengers each year, but when it is fully developed, as many as 100 million people will be able to travel to and from the terminals annually.

This will likely make the airport Europe's largest, currently held by London Heathrow with 80 million passengers.

The Polish giant will also compare well with other transportation hubs in the world. Today, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the most visited with 108 million travelers. In second place is Beijing Capital International Airport with 100 million passengers.

The entire project is expected to cost the equivalent of 180 billion kronor – but that also includes a new railway and a new motorway.

Poland is one of the strongest growth countries in Europe. Last year, the country's GDP grew by 5.1 percent, and the new airport is seen as part of demonstrating Poland's potential.

In addition to the Polish government, state-owned airline LOT has been driving the planning. With the new airport, LOT hopes to triple its passenger numbers and become a leader in long-haul flights to Asia and the Americas.
