Large amounts of snow caused traffic problems in Stockholm County on Monday.
Air traffic is also affected, mainly at Arlanda, Bromma and Landvetter Airports, reports SvD.
”"We generally have delays due to the heavy snow storm. We expect it to continue throughout the day," says Peter Wärring, press spokesperson at Swedavia to SvD.
Five departures have reportedly been canceled at Arlanda and a few more at Landvetter during the morning, and travelers are urged to check if their flights are going as planned before heading to the airport.
SMHI warns that there could be another snowstorm in the hard-hit capital during the day. According to P4 Stockholm Another 30 centimeters of snow could fall.
”"It may come "About 30 centimeters locally in combination with fresh to locally strong easterly gusts, it can cause major traffic problems," says SMHI meteorologist Lisa Frost to P4.
Train traffic from Stockholm is experiencing delays during the day, but is running after an electrical fault that prevented the trains from leaving the depot.
”"There are around 30 departures that are affected, but customers have been able to rebook," says Jonas Olsson at SJ's press service.
The traffic information on SJ's website is down on Monday morning, meaning that passengers cannot receive information about delays and cancellations. However, according to SJ, they will receive information via text message.
Air traffic has also been affected by the snowfall, with delayed and canceled flights resulting in Arlanda, Bromma and Sturup.
Road conditions are difficult in almost the entire country.
”"It's only at the very bottom of southern Sweden that there are some stretches where it's bare."”
The snowfall continues on Monday and SMHI continues to have an orange warning for snowfall on Gotland and in large parts of Stockholm County, as well as a yellow warning for Skåne, among other places.
”There are quite a few bands of snow showers and snowfall from Götaland up towards the southernmost parts of Norrland. In some places, there are stronger bands that could make things a bit more difficult,” says Alexandra Ohlsson, a meteorologist at SMHI.
On Tuesday, the snowfall will continue north towards Dalarna and southern Norrland while weakening.
”Then it looks like slightly milder air is instead making its way into the southern parts of the country, and during the day tomorrow there will be thawing conditions over Götaland and probably also eastern Svealand.”
Later in the week, temperatures above freezing will dominate in Götaland and Svealand, but with a risk of icy conditions during the colder parts of the day.
”I think people need to think carefully and drive cautiously in the evenings and during morning traffic. There's a risk it could start to freeze over in the evenings and be a bit slippy even towards the morning hours in areas where they haven't had time to grit the roads,” says Alexandra Ohlsson.
Traffic in Stockholm is flowing again in the morning after having been at a standstill overnight, resulting in kilometer-long queues.
The police's recommendation continues to be to leave the car at home and work from home if possible.
Trees that have fallen onto overhead wires mean that traffic on the City tram line out towards Djurgården and the Nockebybanan is down, she adds.
”"A large number of trees have fallen across roads in various places in the county. In some places, traffic accidents are preventing plow trucks from doing their work," the Stockholm Police writes on their website.
Trains to and from Stockholm have also been affected by delays after an electrical fault caused by the snow left the entire SJ depot in Hagalund north of Stockholm without power, reports TT.
”"Right now it doesn't look so good," says Leila Fogelholm at SJ's press office.
At 7am on Monday morning there is no forecast for when the power will be restored. The trains departing from Stockholm on Monday morning are late or cancelled.
At the request of the Swedish Transport Administration, SJ has also reduced traffic and cancelled regional trains between Stockholm and Uppsala.
The train problems currently mainly affect the Stockholm area.
”Right now things are going as they should in the rest of the country,” says Leila Fogelholm.
During the day there are warnings of renewed snowfall and SMHI has issued orange weather warnings for Gotland and Stockholm counties.
”"Snowfall that is expected to be heavy at times and can produce large amounts of snow in a short time. This entails, among other things, a risk of very limited road access," SMHI writes on its website.
