Faster and better checks at the world's airports, but Sweden is waiting

Soon you won't have to lift the plastic bag with your toiletries and your computer out of your hand luggage when going through security. Many major airports around the world are now introducing 3D methods to scan luggage more securely and quickly. But in Sweden, the decision is delayed.

In the UK, Heathrow Airport will be the first to introduce the new 3D equipment that can more effectively provide answers about whether prohibited substances are present in luggage.

The new scanner ”sees” through the suitcase to see what type of liquid is present and can also provide a clearer image of all the contents of the luggage. Staff can zoom in and rotate the 3D image for a more confident assessment.

No need to lift the computer out

This eliminates the need to remove laptops and hygiene items from your hand luggage for a separate examination at security.

In the UK, there is a national decision to introduce the modern technology at all major airports by 2022 to strengthen the country's position as a global hub for trade and tourism, according to Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The technology is also being introduced in the US.

But in Sweden there is no decision yet.

”Major investments”

– We are now analyzing which of our airports could introduce the new 3D technology, but it involves major investments, says Mats Paulsson, Director of Security at Swedavia, which owns and operates ten of Sweden's airports.

“The new technology gives staff the opportunity to make more confident assessments. It will also be smoother and a better experience for the traveler,” says Mats Paulsson to SVT News.

Faster body scanning

The technology is now being introduced at several airports in Europe, including Geneva and Schiphol in Amsterdam. They also want to invest in faster body scanning equipment to avoid manual examinations and save time.
