Demand for air travel has recovered more slowly than Finnair expected, which means that the airline is forced to reduce traffic significantly during October.

Finnish airline Finnair is reducing the number of flights in October to around 70-80 daily departures, instead of the previously planned 200 flights per day. For comparison, Finnair flew around 350 flights a day in October last year, the company writes in a press release.

According to the company, demand has recovered significantly worse than previously predicted due to new travel restrictions and the general development of the corona pandemic.

”"We want to maintain Finland's critical connections to European hubs and to our most important Asian destinations, as travel is crucial for Finnish business. However, as travel restrictions have a direct impact on demand, it is unfortunately not possible to operate the traffic program we published previously," says Finnair's Chief Operating Officer Ole Orvér in a press release.

Finnair fell around 1 percent on the Helsinki Stock Exchange after the announcement. Since the beginning of the year, the share has now fallen by just over 60 percent.

When the company presented its traffic figures for August on Tuesday, it turned out that passenger traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), fell by 92.4 percent, compared to the same month last year.
