Threats, drunkenness and harassment. The noise on board airplanes has increased sharply in recent years, reports Vagabond. Now the industry has come together – and is urging air passengers to be more vigilant. 

503 incidents of disruptive passengers on aircraft were reported to The Swedish Transport Agency 2024 – significantly more than two years earlier, when 178 such incidents were reported. This is according to the travel website Vagabond. 

The incidents include threatening, aggressive and drunk passengers – but also people refusing to obey orders and harassment. So far this year, 78 incidents have been reported in Sweden. 

A similar trend is also visible globally. On average, one plane per month has to make an emergency landing because the situation escalates to the point where there is no other way out. 

”Put yourself in airplane mode”

Ahead of this summer's travel, the aviation industry is now joining forces with several other players, including the Swedish Transport Agency and the police. "Put yourself in airplane mode" is the slogan, which is intended to encourage more order and order on board the plane.

– It's not just mobile phones that need to be put in airplane mode, it also applies to air travelers. Air travel should be safe, secure and enjoyable for everyone, says Johan Westin at the Swedish Transport Agency to Vagabond.
