Frenchman traveled across the Atlantic in a barrel

For over four months, the French adventurer bounced around in a barrel in the Atlantic Ocean. He finally arrived at the small island of Sint Eustatius in the Caribbean, where the surprised locals welcomed him, reports CNN.

Jean-Jacques Savin set off from the Canary Islands in his self-built, three-metre-long watercraft, shaped like a barrel. Inside the fiery yellow walls is a small kitchen, a bed and a small storage space. Savin, who was 71 years old when he began the journey, has lived on fish he caught himself. But on New Year's Eve he uncorked a bottle of white wine and ate the foie gras he had brought with him.

Savin, who has previously climbed Mont Blanc, spent most of his time on board watching for fish outside the barrel's small round windows, he told CNN. His capsule-shaped craft has no engine, so the Frenchman relied on the ocean currents to propel him along at a modest two miles per hour.
