Kiruna will be the European Capital of Culture in 2029! With the concept Movement. Below Ground. On Earth. In Space Kiruna weaves together the many elements that define the city's unique character – its long mining tradition, knowledge of the Arctic surroundings and the vision for future space research.

”"We at Kiruna Lappland are happy about this appointment and see great potential for the tourism industry. Through this platform we can continue to develop and highlight cultural experiences within our destination.", says Peter Salomonsson, CEO of Kiruna Lappland.

Every year, two or three cities are designated as European Capitals of Culture by the European Union. The award gives the cities the opportunity to showcase their unique culture. In 2029, Kiruna will share the title with Lublin in Poland. Sweden has previously been represented by Stockholm in 1998 and Umeå in 2014. The award, where Uppsala was also a finalist for European Capital of Culture 2029, highlighting the strength and diversity of Sweden's cultural landscape.

Tips on what to experience in Kiruna

Located north of the Arctic Circle, Kiruna offers a combination of magnificent natural experiences and a rich cultural heritage. The entire city is currently undergoing a major relocation due to mining, which further adds a unique and fascinating dimension to its history. In its program for European Capital of Culture 2029, Kiruna will explore themes such as resilience, creativity and the interplay of traditional and modern influences.

If you are planning a visit to the European Capital of Culture in 2029, here are some tips on what to experience here:

  • Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi: On the banks of the Torne River lies the world-famous Icehotel – a unique hotel created from ice and snow. Here, Arctic and international art and design meet in a spectacular setting.
  • LKAB's Minen: Go underground and discover the world's largest iron ore mine. On a guided tour, you will learn about the mine's history, its current operations and how it has affected Kiruna's ongoing relocation.
  • Kiruna Snow Festival: Next year, the annual Kiruna Snow Festival will celebrate its 40th anniversary. During the festival, which is held in January, Kiruna is filled with festivities such as dog sledding competitions, reindeer races and the international snow sculpture competition.
  • Aurora Sky Station in Abisko: Experience the magic of the Northern Lights at Aurora Sky Station, one of the world's best places to see this natural phenomenon. After a scenic drive from Kiruna, a chairlift takes you up to Nuolja, 900 meters above sea level where an unparalleled view of the starry sky and, with a little luck, dancing northern lights await.
  • Sami culture and crafts: Immerse yourself in the Sami cultural heritage through traditional crafts, music and storytelling. Meet the reindeer and learn more about the history and way of life of Sweden's indigenous people.
