French people over the age of 65 will need a third injection against Covid-19 to obtain a valid Covid passport, French President Emmanuel Macron announced in a speech to the nation.

From December 15, you will need to prove that you have received a third injection to extend the validity of your health passport, Macron said.

The Covid passport, which has been in place in France since August, is required to enter restaurants, cultural events and to travel by domestic train.

The president also warned that the number of COVID-19 cases is once again rising in France, even though the situation is better than in both Germany and the UK. In the past week, the number of infected people has increased by 40 percent.

Over 80 percent of those receiving intensive care for Covid-19 in France are over 50, Macron reminded, and said that a campaign to get people in the 50-64 age group to take a third dose will be launched in December.

The French Covid passport initially sparked protests, but these have subsided. For Macron, it is important to achieve success in the fight against Covid-19, ahead of the presidential election in April.
