Maldives President Dr Mohammed Muizzu is participating in SIDS4 – the fourth international conference of Small Island Developing States. SIDS4 will be held from 27-30 May 2024 in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. This year's theme for the conference is ”Charting the course toward resilient prosperity”, with discussions on the challenges faced by small island developing states.
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) were first recognized at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – also known as The Earth Summit. SIDS are defined as a group of developing countries that face similar social, economic and environmental challenges. Today, SIDS consists of a group of 37 UN Member States and 20 associate members of the UN Regional Commissions, spread across three geographical regions.
Maldives President Dr Mohammed Muizzu will participate in dialogues on the theme ”Revitalising SIDS Economies for Accelerated and Sustainable Growth” together with Anders Adlercreutz, Finland’s Minister for European and Corporate Governance. Maldives Foreign Minister Zameer will deliver the closing remarks at the Private Sector Roundtable on 28 May 2024, while Environment Minister Thoriq and Housing Minister Haidar will participate in the interactive dialogues and a number of side events.
The majority of SIDS member states depend on the tourism industry as their primary source of income, which also contributes to more jobs and foreign exchange. The SIDS4 conference will hold discussions to find strategies to adapt to climate change and changing environmental conditions to ensure the resilience of the tourism industry.
The conference will also highlight sustainable solutions for the tourism industry and strategies to ensure environmentally friendly tourism, reduce the carbon footprint of tourism activities and protect nature while continuing to welcome tourists.
