This year, 12 million euros – just over 120 million kronor – will be invested in free Interrail for up to 20,000 18-year-olds in the EU.
The European Commission hopes to invest even more in the same project in the coming years.
The long-term budget proposal presented on Wednesday allocates 700 million euros – more than seven billion Swedish kronor – to support interrail travel among the EU's young people between 2021 and 2028.
The train ridership initiative is included in the greatly increased funding for the EU's student exchange program, Erasmus Plus, but at the same time risks being left in limbo when the EU member states begin negotiating what should or should not remain in the EU budget.
The entire budget is 1,279 billion euros – over 12 trillion Swedish kronor.
