Eight out of ten Swedes want to continue to be able to pay with cash in the future, a new Sifo survey shows.
In February of this year, before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, 78 percent of Swedes said they wanted cash to remain a possible means of payment in society. When the question was asked again in May, the proportion had increased to 81 percent. The corresponding figure was 73 percent in 2021 and 68 percent in 2018.
”"For five years, we have seen a clear trend in which more and more people want to keep their cash. With Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, many Swedes have also gained an increased understanding of how important cash management is for Sweden's crisis preparedness," says Johan Nilsson, Customer and Marketing Manager at Bankomat in a press release.
The most positive attitude towards cash is among people between the ages of 65 and 79, with 90 percent of that age group wanting to keep cash. But the biggest increase is seen in the 18 to 29 age group, where 72 percent now want cash to remain, compared to 56 percent in 2018.
