More expensive holidays abroad for Swedes this year – this is where you should travel!

The weak Swedish krona means that Swedes need to travel far to experience a cheaper summer vacation. Many households are experiencing more strained finances than in many years and with summer just around the corner, it may be wise to look around for a travel destination that won't empty your wallet.

Over the past year, the Swedish krona has weakened significantly against most currencies around the world. There are few countries where the krona has strengthened if you look at exchange rates. Among the countries where the Swedish krona has strengthened we find Argentina, Lebanon, Turkey, Colombia, Albania, Mexico and Poland.

– We Swedes tend to want to enjoy our summer holidays in southern Europe where we can get sun and warmth. But if you choose Europe this summer, you will have a clearly more expensive experience than in many years. If you look at what a shopping basket costs in the euro countries, you can expect an increase of about 5 percent since last summer, says Jennie Sandén, private economist at Danske Bank Sweden.

Only 4 countries in the world have actually become cheaper to vacation in
To get a fairer picture, you also need to take into account how the countries' inflation has developed. And then the development looks a little more depressing. There are only four countries in the world that Swedes can travel to where they feel it has become cheaper, that is, where Swedes' purchasing power has increased. Countries where it is cheaper to vacation this year with Swedish kronor in your pocket are - Lebanon, Chile, Japan and the Czech Republic.

– These may not be the countries that are at the top of Swedes' top lists of where they plan to spend their summer weeks. But I can say that, for example, Japan, which has been very expensive to vacation in, actually now looks significantly more affordable, says Jennie Sandén.
