During the first four weeks of December, the number of hotel rooms sold in Sweden increased by 3.6 percent compared to 2022.
– The fact that the number of hotel rooms sold during the first four weeks of December increased by 3.6 percent is pleasing. But a calendar effect has also likely contributed to the rise. Christmas fell one day later this year, which may have contributed to increased travel the week before Christmas, says Thomas Jakobsson, chief economist at Visita.
– Despite a generally weak economic situation, demand for hotel rooms is holding up well so far. However, with continued high costs pressuring profitability and financially stressed households and companies, the financial future of hotel companies is still characterized by uncertainty. The situation is also worsened by the recently increased employer contributions for young people and increased alcohol taxes, concludes Thomas Jakobsson.
*Data is preliminary and refers to a selection of 712 hotels in Sweden. Data is not calendar adjusted and does not take into account which days of the week, for example Christmas, fall.

*The reason for presenting data for 1-28 of each month is to improve comparability by avoiding day-of-week effects on an entire month, as demand naturally fluctuates over the week and a month spans more than four weeks.
