A first case of the highly contagious coronavirus variant BA.2.75 has been registered in Denmark, the Ministry of Health announces.
BA.2.75 is a new subvariant of omicron and has been found in a Dane who has been to southern Europe.
Germany, the UK and the US, among others, have also reported cases of the variant, which was first found in India where it appears to have spread very quickly.
On June 12, BA.2.75 accounted for two percent of Indian infections, and about a month later it accounted for 23 percent. However, the Ministry of Health emphasizes that it is not clear whether the variant is more contagious than other corona variants.
”"The variant has been more infectious in some countries than other known variants, but it is unclear whether it will outcompete BA.5 in Denmark," the ministry writes on Twitter.
BA.5 is also a subvariant of omicron and is currently the dominant variant in Denmark.
