Cuba's capital, Havana, is the next city to introduce quarantine rules after a second wave of the coronavirus hit the country.

The city's governor, Reinaldo García Zapata, said in a televised speech that the city will impose a nighttime curfew for two weeks starting September 1 and that travel into the city will be severely restricted. During this period, the measure will be evaluated and possibly extended.

In June, President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared the coronavirus pandemic under control and authorities talked about reopening the country. Tourists were allowed to enter Cuba again, but since last month, quarantine rules have begun to be tightened again.

Most shops will now only be allowed to sell food and other essential goods to residents in the immediate neighborhood. Authorities partly blame the new rules on residents, who they say have not been following the rules sufficiently. That is why more new fines are also being introduced for those who violate quarantine rules.

Last week, 269 new cases were registered, the highest number to date. In total, more than 3,800 Cubans have been infected, and 92 people have died.
