Now it's time once again for Parisians to wear face masks when they go out. Starting New Year's Eve, it will be mandatory for everyone over the age of eleven to wear a face mask, or risk a fine of 135 euros, around 1,400 kronor.
Exceptions are made for cyclists, scooter riders and others who drive two-wheeled vehicles, as well as for exercisers, local authorities say.
France reported a new record of Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, with 208,000 infections in the past 24 hours. The spread of the infection is being exacerbated by the new omicron variant.
”I wouldn’t call the omicron a wave anymore. . .I would call it a tidal wave,” said French Health Minister Olivier Véran.
The government has announced several new restrictions, including the continued closure of nightclubs and requirements for increased working from home for employees who can work remotely.
The requirement to wear a face mask is already mandatory in public buildings and on public transport in France.
