After several years of discussion, everything now appears clear for the construction of a rapid tramway in Copenhagen.
The Danish state, the capital region, and eleven municipalities have entered into an agreement on the construction.
The tram will run around the Danish capital, from Lyngby in the north to Ishøj in the south. It is expected to be completed in 2024 and will have 29 stations along the 28-kilometre route.
The state accounts for 40 percent of the funding, the Capital Region of Denmark 26 percent, and the municipalities 34 percent. The state will not be a shareholder in the tram company nor will it contribute to the costs of operation and maintenance.
”Just the expectation that the tram will arrive has led to a significant urban development being initiated along the route. This means a long-awaited boost for several areas,” says Trine Græse, vice-chair of the tram company.
