Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has filed a complaint regarding Poland with the EU competition authorities.

Reuters reports that the country does not want to develop the airport that Ryanair uses as a base, Modlin Airport near Warsaw.

The Polish airline LOT does not fly from that airport but from the main Chopin airport.

Ryanair says it intends to increase the number of passengers flying through the airport from three to six million per year.

”"To handle such a level of traffic, the infrastructure around Warsaw Modlin Airport needs to be expanded, and for two years it has been illegally blocked by Warsaw Chopin Airport," Ryanair said, according to the news agency.

Chopin is owned by the state-owned company PPL, which also owns 30 percent of Modlin. The Polish government has also issued a recommendation to concentrate all air traffic at a new airport about ten kilometers from the capital Warsaw.

LOT stands behind the decision to build a new airport while it is criticized by Ryanair.

The Polish airport owner PPL, meanwhile, believes that Ryanair is abusing its position by demanding development of Modlin. It is currently the only airline using the airport.
