Low-cost airline Ryanair is reducing its capacity in Spain by one million seats ahead of the upcoming winter season compared to the same period last year.

The Irish company transports the most passengers in Spain and accounts for a large part of the air traffic to and from smaller, regional airports in the country.

In Santiago de Compostela, almost half a million seats and seven routes are being cut, which corresponds to 80 percent of capacity. In total, capacity is being reduced by 41 percent to and from regional airports.

The reason for the cut, according to the company's CEO Eddie Wilson, is increased fees from airport operator Aena.

– Spain is a country closed to tourism, he says, according to El País.
