At least two people have died and around 70 have been injured in a serious train accident in the state of South Carolina in the USA.

A passenger train with 139 passengers and eight crew members on board collided with a freight train. The passenger train was travelling between New York and Miami.

Most of the injured passengers have sustained abrasions and broken bones.

The collision occurred at around 2.35 am local time in the city of Cayce.

The train company Amtrak states that the passenger train's locomotive and some carriages derailed.
