In December, a new airport will open right between the ski metropolises of Sälen and Trysil.

Now it is discovered Expressen that the new airport, named Scandinavian Mountain Airport, is financed by tourism in the form of a ”growth grant”. At all of Skistar’s accommodations in the area, the cost will increase by three percent – which constitutes the ”growth grant”.

This means that all future ski tourists in the area, whether they want to or not, must help finance the airport.

Every year, Sälen and Trysil together have just over 5.6 million guest nights. By opening the airport, there are hopes for an increase.

”"The growth money goes to the airport because it contributes to the region's overall development," says Anders Bjernulf, communications manager at Scandinavian Mountains Airport, to DT.

However, the growth money only constitutes a small part of the private airport's total budget. What part it is is not public. The construction is also financed by an investment grant of 250 million kronor that the EU Commission approved in May 2017.
