In line with the strong homestay trend and the fact that more people want to be active all year round, SkiStar is making a major investment in SkiStar Sports & Adventures at the new SkiStar Stockholm Hammarbybacken. The company is thus the first in Sweden to offer modern summer skiing in the middle of the capital – SkiStar SummerSki – along with the new attractions SkiStar Klätterpark, Mountain Coaster and Mountain Tube.. Stockholm Hammarbybacken, SkiStar's sixth destination, is now being introduced in a new style with an adventure center for all active Stockholmers and visitors to the city.
Ahead of summer 2021, SkiStar made its biggest investment in the summer season in the company's history with the concept SkiStar Sports & Adventures, which aims to inspire socializing through activity and the joy of movement it brings. First up were SkiStar in Trysil, Sälen and Åre.
– We are now developing the concept and making the experience possible at SkiStar Stockholm Hammarbybacken. With this initiative, we want to inspire all Stockholmers and visitors to exciting adventures and activities with the unique Hammarbybacken in focus. Here we get more people moving in line with our sustainability work and at the same time offer exciting attractions with easy access for memorable experiences in the middle of Stockholm, says Stefan Sjöstrand, President and CEO of SkiStar.
Last summer season was already a success with record numbers of visitors to SkiStar's destinations. Summer 2022 also looks set to be a success with high demand for an active holiday: the booking situation* for the summer season is currently +40 percent compared to the same period last year.
– Together with the City of Stockholm, we finally have the opportunity to implement our vision with Hammarbybacken and the unique location and all the opportunities that are here with activity and the joy of movement. If everything goes according to plan, we hope to be able to open several of the attractions for everyone who, together with us, wants to make Stockholm and Hammarbybacken a little more active and a little more fun all year round, says Jonas Bauer, business development manager at SkiStar who worked on the project.

SkiStar SummerSki: For those who can't get enough of skiing on snow in the winter or who are curious to try it, there is now the opportunity to do it in the summer on 7,000 square meters of skiable surface in the form of artificial grass down the mountain, to mimic the feeling of skiing on snow. The material is made from partially recycled plastic. The goal is to double the number of ski days per year thanks to summer skiing and thereby contribute to SkiStar's sustainability goal of seven million ski and activity days by 2030. Planned opening for late summer/August 2022.
SkiStar Mountain Coaster: our own version of a toboggan or "coaster" 800 meters down the mountain on rails; a fast-paced ride at 40km/h that hopefully offers adrenaline, laughter and wonderful views. Planned opening for Midsummer Eve, June 24 this year.
SkiStar Mountain Tube: Take a ride down the mountain on tubing (rings) on three different courses, adapted for the whole family and guaranteed to give you a hearty meal. Planned opening August 2022.
SkiStar Climbing Park: The success from Åre and Sälen for both young and old, includes seven high-altitude courses, around 60 obstacles and a 100-meter long zipline. Planned opening for Midsummer Eve, June 24 this year.
Other activities: Running training, hiking, outdoor gym and ski rental as well as bike rental will be available for XC and MTB cycling to, for example, the nearby Nackareservatet. In addition, several different camps and events will be offered on site, for example with Järv Hammarbybacken already on May 14–15: over 100 teams have already registered for the family competitions with a focus on joy, cooperation and community, inspired by Wild kids.
