The Spanish government is concerned about how the country's housing market is being affected by tourists and foreigners.
In many places, rents are rising rapidly, and the number of homes available to Spaniards is decreasing as many are rented out to tourists year-round.
Now Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is launching a reform package to improve the housing market, El Pais reports.
Among other things, the government wants to double the tax on homes purchased by foreigners from countries outside the EU, and for apartments rented out through Airbnb, for example, to be classified as business activities and thus receive higher taxes and VAT.
The government is also proposing a series of measures to give publicly owned housing a greater role in the market.
