Stranded tourists in chaotic Peru

The thousands of tourists who have been stranded in Peru can now leave the country, reports TT.

Around 4,500 tourists, most from the United States and Europe, have been stuck in various parts of the country because trains and flights have been cancelled due to the unrest that followed the ouster and arrest of the country's former president, Pedro Castillo.

Several airports have been closed, but on Friday the Cusco airport opened and foreign tourists could start flying out.

"By Sunday at the latest, all stranded tourists will leave," Tourism Minister Luis Fernando Helguero told the state news agency Adina.
