New Zealand company Dawn Aerospace made a groundbreaking flight on November 12 when its rocket-powered plane, the Mk-II Aurora, reached supersonic speeds, becoming the first civilian aircraft to break the sound barrier since Concorde. The Aurora also set a new record for the fastest rate of climb, ascending to around 66,000 feet in just 118.6 seconds – 4.2 seconds faster than the record set in the 1970s.
