Swedavia's airports Visby Airport, Åre Östersund Airport and Kiruna Airport have now achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation level 5, the highest international certification within the framework for airports' climate transition work. This makes Swedavia a world leader in the field, as seven out of ten Swedavia airports are certified at the highest level.

– The fact that three new Swedavia airports have now achieved the highest climate certification is a clear testament to our long-term and purposeful work to drive aviation's climate transition. With seven out of ten airports certified at ACA level 5, we are showing that it is possible to combine socially important infrastructure with climate leadership, says Fredrik Jaresved, Strategy Director at Swedavia.

The long-term goal for the Swedish aviation industry is for domestic aviation to be fossil-free by 2030 and international aviation to be fossil-free by 2045 based on the aviation industry's joint roadmap within the framework of Fossil-Free Sweden. Swedavia sees sustainable aviation fuel, electric aviation and hydrogen aviation as crucial elements for the industry to cope with aviation's necessary climate transition.

Swedavia became fossil-free in its own airport operations at all ten airports in 2020, something the group was the first in the world to achieve. In 2025, all ground operations at Swedavia's airports that are run by other players will also become fossil-free through the partnership plan that has been developed, in which all players at the airports sign agreements with Swedavia with a focus on phasing out fossil fuels from their operations.

Through the level 5 certification for Visby Airport, Åre Östersund Airport and Kiruna Airport within Airport Carbon Accreditation, seven out of ten Swedavia airports are certified at the highest level, after Gothenburg Landvetter Airport and Malmö Airport were certified at level 5 in December 2023, followed by Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Ronneby Airport in October 2024. Based on the level 5 certification of Visby, Åre Östersund and Kiruna, Swedavia has thus taken the final necessary steps in phasing out fossil fuels at all levels at the three airports.

Within the framework of Airport Carbon Accreditation, Swedavia's ambition is for the remaining three airports – Bromma Stockholm Airport, Luleå Airport and Umeå Airport – to be certified to level 5 in 2026.

Swedavia is a group that owns, operates and develops 10 airports throughout Sweden. Our role is to create the accessibility that Sweden needs to facilitate travel, business and meetings. Satisfied and safe travelers are the foundation of Swedavia's business. Swedavia is a world leader in the development of airports with the lowest possible climate impact. Since 2020, Swedavia's own airport operations have been fossil-free at all ten airports. The group had a turnover of approximately SEK 6.4 billion in 2024 and has approximately 2,750 employees.
