Hundreds of people have had to be evacuated on the holiday island of Lesbos. According to the charter companies, Ving's and Apollo's Swedish passengers are safe.

”"They are at a destination some distance from where the fire is raging right now," says Anna Hagberg, press spokesperson at Ving.

Four extensive fires have broken out in Greece as a result of the current heat wave with temperatures above 40 degrees.

One of the fires is raging on the tourist island of Lesbos, where around 450 people have been forced to evacuate from a holiday resort. The fire broke out on Saturday morning in Vatera, which is located in the southern part of the island.

Charter companies Ving and Apollo currently have between 10-15 travelers each on site. However, they are said to be on a different part of the island.

”"They are at a destination some distance from where the fire is currently raging. But we are of course following developments," says Anna Hagberg, press spokesperson at Ving.

”"No one has been affected as far as we know. Some people are getting around the island on their own and have not booked accommodation with us," says Sandra Miller Kinge, press spokesperson at Apollo. 

Guests should have been informed about the situation and which areas should be avoided, according to Anna Hagberg. Sandra Miller Kinge says that they are cooperating with the authorities to stay updated on the current situation.

”"Forest fires are common in the Mediterranean and they are good at dealing with them. The latest information we have received is that they are working on the fire and the situation has not gotten worse."”

She urges travelers who feel worried to contact them.

”You can see smoke if you are on the island,” she says.

Both companies say that there is currently no need to stop travel to the island. However, there is always an evacuation plan in place where people can be moved to new accommodations and destinations.
