The criticized travel company Detur is filing for bankruptcy, the company writes on its website. The company was criticized as recently as last week by the Consumer Ombudsman due to a lack of communication with customers.

Detur has announced that it is halting operations for the rest of 2022 and 2023, after six months of storms surrounding canceled trips and non-payment of refunds.

KO demanded on Wednesday that the company inform all its travelers within 14 days that they have the right to a refund for canceled trips. Failure to do so could result in a fine of one million kronor.

KO wrote in a press release that the Package Travel Act is clear and that a tour operator must notify the traveler and refund the money to the customer within 14 days.

”"But in order for consumers to be able to act, they must first be told that they can demand a refund. Here we believe that Detur is seriously failing in its information obligation," said Elin Berner, litigation counsel at KO.

Now that the company no longer sees it profitable to continue operating, it is unclear what will happen to those who have still not received refunds. Detur writes on its website that travelers should dispute purchases through their bank or card issuer:

”"For travelers who have had their trips canceled, a refund of the amount paid, if they paid by debit or credit card, can be made by disputing the amount with the issuing bank, which is usually a shorter route with the fastest processing time," the travel site's website states.

Detur further writes that card issuers have recently chosen to withhold payments to the travel company, which has made the "liquidity situation acute and the breathing space required for the measures planned to ensure survival has been eroded," the company writes.
