Tons of garbage in the Galápagos

Remove

The paradise islands of the Galápagos are being littered from the sea.

Since January, 22 tons of garbage have been collected on beaches in the archipelago, according to national park employees.
The Galápagos belong to Ecuador and are located about 100 miles off the west coast of South America. Since 1959, 97 percent of the land area has been a national park.

Most of the trash is carried by currents from Central and South America, but debris from Asia is also appearing, according to a press release from the park. One of the purposes of collecting the trash is to investigate whether invasive species can reach the Galápagos with the trash.
The diversity of the archipelago's animal world inspired the British scientist Charles Darwin to develop the theory of evolution, the doctrine of the origin of species.
