Due to the war in Ukraine, cruise ships are not stopping in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg. Instead, passengers are spending a few extra nights in Stockholm – and this is generating increased revenue for tourism in the capital.
– It is of course very important for the entire tourism industry that we are now getting a boost again after the tough years that have passed, says Stefan Scheja, marketing manager for ferries and cruise traffic at the Ports of Stockholm.
Before the pandemic, approximately twelve million passengers came to Stockholm annually, by ferry and cruise. This generated seven billion kronor in tourism revenue. During the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, the number of boat passengers decreased to approximately four million per year, which has led to a loss of 4.7 billion kronor in tourism revenue.
