Tourists continue to flock to the mountains. The pressure is so intense that it is even starting to be felt on nature.
“We have become so popular that we are worried about wear and tear,” says Anna Sarri, CEO of Nikkaluokta Mountain Station.
Anna Sarri works as the site manager at Nikkaluokta mountain station. She is pleased that many people are heading to the mountains for their holidays – but there is a downside to the increased influx of tourists eager for the mountains.
– We have become so popular that we are worried about wear and tear and that is actually our problem right now, she says.
Swedes account for the largest increase
The trend of "svemester" or "fjällmester" continues and it is primarily the Swedes who are responsible for the increase in tourists in the Swedish mountains.
– We suspected that there would be a lot of people this summer too because bookings started already when the snow was still there, says Anna Sarri, CEO of Nikkaluokta mountain station.
Want everyone to help each other
Anna Sarri believes that all actors who conduct business in the mountains – such as the county administrative board, private companies and the Swedish Tourist Association – must help each other with measures to reduce littering and wear and tear on the sensitive mountain nature.
