Norrtåg points out wildlife accidents as the biggest cause of traffic problems this winter, and is demanding more wildlife fencing, reports Sundsvalls Tidning.

According to the train company's statistics, 80 wildlife accidents occurred during December and January. For the same period last year, the corresponding figure was 24.
– What has stood out enormously is wildlife accidents. We have had over 80 incidents with animals on the tracks; it is unique to have collisions with wildlife on this scale, says Maria Höglander, CEO of Norrtåg, to the newspaper.

The large amounts of snow have caused animals to seek out the roads where it's easier to travel. In many wildlife collisions, the front of the train is destroyed, leading to long disruptions in traffic.
