The heavy snowfall is causing significant disruption to traffic, and the problems are expected to continue throughout Tuesday. Many trains are cancelled or delayed in the Stockholm area.

”There are delays throughout the rail network,” says Anders Edgren from SJ's press office.

Train services from Stockholm are particularly badly affected by the snow squalls. Many regional trains were cancelled in advance on Monday morning. Then, around 30 trains were cancelled or delayed due to an electrical fault caused by the snow.

The traffic information on SJ's website was also down for a while, which made things even more difficult for travellers.

SJ is cancelling regional trains on the Stockholm–Uppsala, Stockholm–Västerås and Gävle–Linköping routes on Tuesday as well.

”Trafikverket wants us to reduce traffic density,” says Anders Edgren from SJ's press office to TT on Monday evening.

On the roads it is also difficult, in almost the entire country.

”It's only at the bottom of southern Sweden that there are any stretches free of snow, says Katarina Wolffram”, press officer at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Road conditions and snow caused bus services in Trollhättan and Vänersborg to be cancelled on Monday.’

Air traffic has also been affected by the snowfall, with delayed and cancelled flights, mainly at Arlanda. Traffic has been better at Bromma and Landvetter, but there have been delays there too.

SMHI has issued an orange warning for snowfall across large parts of Stockholm County on Monday, as well as a yellow warning for Skåne, among other areas.

”There are quite a few bands of snow showers and snowfall from Götaland up towards the southernmost parts of Norrland. In some places, there are stronger bands that could make things a bit more difficult,” says Alexandra Ohlsson, a meteorologist at SMHI.

On Tuesday The snowfall continues north towards Dalarna and southern Norrland while weakening.

”Then it looks like slightly milder air is instead making its way into the southern parts of the country, and during the day tomorrow there will be thawing conditions over Götaland and probably also eastern Svealand.”

Later in the week, temperatures above freezing will dominate in Götaland and Svealand, but with a risk of icy conditions during the colder parts of the day.

”I think people need to think carefully and drive cautiously in the evenings and during morning traffic. There's a risk it could start to freeze over in the evenings and be a bit slippy even towards the morning hours in areas where they haven't had time to grit the roads,” says Alexandra Ohlsson.
