Following the extensive wildfires on Rhodes in the summer of 2023, TUI is now launching a new reforestation project to restore nature and biodiversity. The new TUI forest is being established adjacent to the Monastery of Panagia Ypseni and covers an area of 80,000 square metres.

Following the devastating wildfires on Rhodes in the summer of 2023, extensive work is now under way to restore the landscape and create new habitats for both plants and animals. The initiative is funded by TUI Care Foundation with support from TUI staff, the Rhodes Co-Lab, and donations from TUI guests.

– TUI Forest on Rhodes combines nature conservation with a long-term commitment to the region. The aim is to support the landscape's natural recovery and to contribute sustainably to preserving the biodiversity of Rhodes, says Sebastian Ebel, CEO of TUI Group.

The Greek Orthodox Monastery of Panagia Ypseni is one of the areas most severely affected by the fires, with large parts of its vegetation destroyed. Today, the monastery stands at the heart of the reforestation efforts, symbolising a new beginning for the region. Together with local partners, olive trees, carob trees, cypresses and cedars are being planted – carefully selected species that will both strengthen the ecosystem's resilience and create new habitats.

The project is part of Rhodes Co-Lab, a joint initiative between the South Aegean Region and TUI Group with the aim of developing more sustainable tourism on Rhodes. The current area is located directly adjacent to a nature reserve and plays an important role in restoring habitats for many animal species.

A total of 3,060 trees will be planted, including 2,000 olive trees, 500 carob trees, 500 cypresses, and 60 citrus trees. At the same time, modern infrastructure for irrigation and fire protection is being built. An educational and information centre, funded by the Regional Government of the South Aegean, is also planned, focusing on environmental education, volunteer activities, and visitor engagement.

In addition to the ecological effects, the project also contributes to social and economic development in the region. The restoration of the landscape reduces soil erosion, strengthens biodiversity and increases resilience to future fires. At the same time, around 45 jobs are created or secured, and the local population gains a long-term source of income through the management of new olive groves.

Together with local partner Gia Ti Fisi and a large number of volunteers, TUI Forest Rhodes also creates opportunities for visitors to experience the island's nature up close and actively contribute to its conservation.
