”"The eruption has started," the Icelandic Meteorological Institute reports. Lava is pouring out of the Fagradalsfjall volcano.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns Swedes of the risk of landslides in the area. IMO, Iceland's equivalent of SMHI, has had a feeling that the Fagradalsfjall volcano would erupt. Over 10,000 earthquakes have been registered on the island this weekend.

On Wednesday afternoon, it was a fact.

”"The outbreak has started," IMO writes on Twitter.

The eruption occurred in Fagradalsfjall in the western part of Meradalir, about 1.5 kilometers north of Stóra-Hrút, writes Icelandic.  MBL.

The volcano is located about 50 kilometers outside Reykjavik. The area was affected by an eruption in the spring of 2021. The magma flow is now about 20 cubic meters per second and the volcano spews magma from cracks several hundred meters long while gas rises.

”"This is a slightly more powerful eruption than the last one, this is maybe fifty percent larger at the beginning than the last eruption," says volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson, to MBL.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "Be careful"”

A surveillance camera from the site shows lava pouring out of the volcano. IMO is monitoring developments in the area and researchers on site will assess the situation. The Civil Protection Department has raised its preparedness to "emergency phase".

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns Swedes in the area of the risk of avalanches.

”"Travelers in the area should be aware that there is an increased risk of rockfall and rockfalls have been reported in several places on the Reykjanes Peninsula. People are urged to be careful on steep slopes, near steep sea cliffs and avoid areas where rocks can fall," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes on its website.
