Finnair carried 1.13 million passengers in August, an increase of 2.3 percent compared to the same month last year. At the same time, capacity decreased by 4.8 percent. Revenue per available seat kilometer, RASK, increased by 12.3 percent – from approximately 7.7 to 8.7 euro cents per seat kilometer.
Finnair's total traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), decreased by 3.1 percent in August. The decline was primarily due to reduced traffic across the North Atlantic and the company's flights to the Middle East having been suspended since 28 February due to the security situation in the region.
The cabin factor rose by 1.4 percentage points to 80.3 percent.
At the same time, Finnair's revenue per available seat kilometer, RASK, improved. The measure indicates how much revenue the airline generates for each seat kilometer offered. In August, RASK amounted to 8.7 euro cents per available seat kilometer, which was 12.3 percent higher than in August 2025. This corresponds to a level of approximately 7.7 euro cents a year earlier.
Finnair states that the improvement was driven by both a higher cabin factor and higher yield, i.e. higher revenue in relation to the traffic actually sold.
European traffic increased
Europe accounted for the most significant passenger growth during the month. Finnair carried 831,000 passengers on European routes, 6.5 percent more than in August last year.
Capacity in Europe increased by 1.9 percent, partly due to new destinations, while traffic increased by 5.3 percent. The cabin factor improved by 2.5 percentage points to 76.9 percent.
In Asian traffic, the number of passengers decreased marginally by 0.6 percent to 146,000. The cabin load factor amounted to 85.9 percent.
Severe capacity reduction across the Atlantic
On the North Atlantic routes, capacity decreased by almost 25 percent. The number of passengers fell by 14.8 percent to 48,000.
Despite the reduction, the load factor increased by 6.8 percentage points to 80.8 percent. Finnair reduced capacity to all North American destinations compared to last year, although the new Toronto route partially offset the decline.
Domestic traffic decreased by 1.6 percent to just over 101,000 passengers.
So far in 2026, Finnair has transported 8.52 million passengers, which is 7 percent more than in the corresponding period last year.
Punctuality also improved in August. 81.4 percent of Finnair's flights arrived on schedule, compared to 79.8 percent a year earlier.
