The earthquake measured 6.7 on the Richter scale and had its epicenter near the Olympic city of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan.
Roads were destroyed, a landslide buried many houses along a mountain ridge and millions of people were left without power, the Japan Times reports. At least one person has died, 48 people were injured and at least 32 are missing, according to the newspaper.
