On Sunday, 1.5 million checked-in passengers were registered at airports in the US. This is on par with figures from before the pandemic hit in March last year.
Rochelle Wallensky, director of the CDC, says the situation is worrying.
"Now is not the right time to travel. We are worried, not only about the risk of infection on the plane but about what happens when people travel and meet others who are not vaccinated," she says.
Miami, Florida, where many Americans travel during spring break, declared a state of emergency over the weekend and imposed a curfew to try to contain the spread of the infection.
The number of new cases in the United States is no longer increasing at the same rate, but it is still estimated that around 50,000 people are infected with the coronavirus daily. A quarter of all Americans have received a first dose of the vaccine.
