The regional airports in Sweden had a terrible year. They lost every tenth traveler.
Air travel at Sweden's 33 regional airports decreased by 10 percent last year. Although several regional airports recorded increases, air travel to and from the regional airports decreased by a total of 275,000 passengers in 2019.
Meanwhile, state-run airports lost only 4 percent of their travelers.
At the regional airports, the decline was greatest in Jönköping, Karlstad and Skellefteå, which each lost over 30 percent. Mora over 40 percent. In all cases, this is due to airlines leaving the destination, either in whole or in part, during the year.
Reduced flying is mainly noticeable on domestic flights and not as much on international flights. Internationally, the decline is significant for Sweden. In Europe, it is almost only in Sweden that flying is decreasing. The most likely reasons are the introduced aviation tax and the ongoing climate debate against flying.
