American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has asked airlines around the world that fly the 737 Max plane model to check nuts in the rudder system, according to the American aviation authority FAA.

According to CNN and the FAA, it comes after an unnamed international airline discovered that a nut was missing from part of the rudder mechanism on a plane and that the corresponding nut was not tightened in a new plane that the company was about to put into service. There are reportedly 1,370 planes of the type in question in service worldwide today.

The FAA emphasizes that they will monitor the inspections closely and suggest actions based on whether they show more loose or missing nuts.
