Passenger traffic to Swedish ports continues to decline. One contributing factor is the uncertain global situation, according to the Swedish Maritime Administration.
”"The range of cruises in the Baltic Sea has decreased after first the pandemic and then the outbreak of war in Ukraine. In particular, cruises aimed at an international audience have not taken place," says Communications Director Niclas Härenstam on the authority's website.
A total of 20.5 million passengers traveled on ships operating in Swedish ports in 2024. This is a three percent decrease compared to 2023. This can also be compared to 27 million travelers in 2019, before the pandemic.
Last year, the reductions took place mainly in Strömstad, Helsingborg, Kapellskär and Gothenburg and, according to the Swedish Maritime Administration, is due to a lower supply of ferry traffic.
Seen over five years, the loss is greatest in the Stockholm ports with traffic across the Baltic Sea.
A total of 67,100 ships called at Swedish ports last year, which is a decrease of almost four percent compared to the previous year. Excluding the pandemic year 2020, this is the lowest figure in five years.
But despite fewer calls, ships are more well-filled with cargo. Volumes are stable with an increase of two percent in 2024 to just over 155 million tons.
