A new international train line between Oslo and Berlin is planned to start in the summer of 2028. For the first time, it would mean a direct train connection between Gothenburg and the German capital – without changes along the way.
The venture is backed by Norwegian Vy in collaboration with Danish DSB and German Deutsche Bahn. The train will operate year-round with two departures per day. The journey time between Oslo and Berlin is estimated at approximately 14–15 hours.
The new line will simultaneously be the first direct rail link between Norway and Denmark in over 20 years and is expected to strengthen opportunities for climate-smart travel between Scandinavia and the continent.
The venture aligns with a growing interest in international train travel in Europe. Starting in June 2026, Snälltåget will launch direct trains between Oslo and Malmö via Gothenburg, with onward connections to Hamburg and Berlin.
SJ is also planning extended night train connections to Germany via Gothenburg, further strengthening the city's role as a future hub for international train travel.
