Travel abroad has been and remains restricted, including travel to Japan.
But that doesn't mean there hasn't been exciting news in Japan. As vaccinations begin to roll out, it's time to start dreaming again.
We would therefore like to present Japan's hot list with all the new places and experiences to discover in Japan in 2021 and beyond, when travel restrictions are lifted.
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has published the latest list of new travel destinations and developments in Japan.
Below we highlight some of our favorites from the list without ranking them.
- Stay hereall-purpose thouse of the deer;Located on the southernmost island of Japan, subtropical Okinawa offers beautiful beaches and warm temperatures to visitors year-round.
The archipelago of 160 islands is surrounded by stunning natural beauty and is just a three-hour flight from Tokyo. Treeful Treehouse is a sustainable resort powered solely by electricity produced by solar energy. The Treehouse rooms, nestled in the jungle, have 360-degree views, with a private patio complete with cozy hammocks that are perfect for stargazing at night. The resort is scheduled to open in 2021.
- Japan's first castle hotel; NIPPONIA Hotel Ozu Castle Town opened its doors to visitors in 2020. Originally built in the 16th century, Ozu Castle has been completely renovated using traditional methods and is now a hotel. Visitors should also take a stroll around the old castle town and enjoy the unique environment that has been preserved from the Edo period (1603-1867) to the Meiji period (1868-1912). Ozu is located about 2.5 hours from Tokyo.
- The zero waste city; In 2003, the mountain town of Kamikatsu was declared Japan’s first zero-waste city. Today, the city has managed to reach its recycling rate of 80 % through a series of ambitious activities and environmental initiatives. In 2020, their new ”Zero Waste Center Why?” opened – in a building built in the shape of a question mark with recycled and reused materials. At the Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center, consumers and producers learn about everyday waste and the quest for a waste-free society, always with a thought of ”why?”.
