Japan's tourism continues to grow despite a sharp drop in visitors from China, with new figures showing that increased spending by other international travellers is now compensating for up to 60 percent of the drop.

According to the Japan Tourism Agency, consumption by foreign visitors increased by 2.5 percent, while the number of international arrivals reached 3.6 million in March – an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the same month last year.

The growth is primarily driven by travelers from South Korea and Taiwan. South Korean visitors totaled nearly 800,000, while over 650,000 came from Taiwan.

At the same time, the number of Chinese visitors has fallen sharply – by around 60 percent – as a result of political and economic tensions between the countries. Despite this, experts assess that the loss is significant but not decisive for the industry.

Japan's tourism sector has instead become more diversified. Visitors from the United States increased by 14 percent in the first quarter of the year, while markets such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines also show increases. Europe is also contributing strongly, with the number of visitors increasing by over 50 percent by the end of March.

Revenues are also boosted by long-haul travelers who stay longer and spend more, especially from countries such as France, Germany and Italy.

The spring season, with the cherry blossoms as a draw, is expected to further boost tourism. Last year, the number of visitors increased by almost 30 percent in April, and forecasts point to continued strong growth this year.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Chinese market, Japan continues to focus on other regions and intensify its international marketing – a sign that tourism can grow even in a challenging geopolitical situation.
