Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano is demanding that a man filmed carving his fiancée's name into the classic Colosseum amphitheater in Rome be identified and punished, writes CNN.
”"I think it is very serious, undignified and very rude that a tourist defiles one of the world's most famous places, a historical heritage like the Colosseum, by carving his fiancée's name," the Minister of Culture wrote on Twitter on Monday.
Sangiuliano also writes that his hope is that the perpetrator will be identified and punished in accordance with Italian law.
The minister's Twitter post also included a blurred image of the young tourist and a video purportedly showing the suspected perpetrator carving letters into one of the walls of the 2,000-year-old amphitheater.
According to the Italian news agency Ansa, it now reads "Ivan+Haley 23" on one of the walls of the Colosseum.
If the carver is identified and convicted of the act, he can be punished with up to five years in prison or a fine of more than 150,000 Swedish kronor.
