Lots of trash tents left on the mountain

Kebnekaise mountain station has had a high visitor pressure this past summer. But many of the hikers contributed to a new and unwanted phenomenon, when they dumped their tents and other equipment around the facility. More than 100 tents have been left at or near the station. Most have been low-cost tents in poor condition.

– Sometimes the tents are completely empty, but there has often been garbage, wet clothes and brand new equipment left behind, sometimes not even unpacked. It almost looks like people have left the tent in a panic, says Marit Sarri, site manager at Kebnekaise mountain station, to SVT News Norrbotten.

In previous summers, the mountain station staff has picked up two or three trash tents, and the hypothesis is that this summer's littering is due to a high proportion of new guests, completely unaccustomed to the mountains.
