Marginal recovery in the number of guest nights in May

The number of guest nights at hotels, campsites, holiday villages and hostels in Sweden recovered marginally in May compared to April, but is down 57 percent compared to May 2019. It is particularly weak for hotels, with a decline of 72 percent from May 2019.

This is shown by statistics from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development.

”"Overall, levels are still low, especially for hotels. The major cities and Gotland are the hardest hit. However, we can see some improvement in May for other forms of accommodation. Above all, campsites have recovered somewhat, which is noticeable for Halland and Kalmar counties, including Öland," says Kristian Seth, Head of Analysis at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development, in a comment.

Foreign guest nights, which accounted for 13 percent of the total number of guest nights, decreased by 76 percent from May 2019, while Swedish guest nights decreased by 51 percent.

”"The statistics for holiday villages and private accommodation rentals are slowly starting to climb, as is camping. This is probably because in these forms of accommodation it is easier to keep distance and cope with other restrictions on socializing," says Kristian Seth.

He adds that there is also an effect of more Swedes vacationing in Sweden and notes that campsites in May were up to 80 percent of the level for the corresponding month last year.
