Indonesia has decided on a moratorium (temporary halt) on the construction of hotels, villas, and nightclubs in certain areas of the tourist-heavy island of Bali, an official told Reuters news agency.

It's part of the government's attempt to tackle the consequences of mass tourism.

The schedule, however, is unclear.

Tourism has recovered in Bali following the pandemic, but there is growing concern about the strain visitors are placing on the island.

In February, a tourist tax was introduced, and the authorities hope to build a railway line between the airport and popular tourist destinations to reduce the pressure on the roads.
